Customer Reviews

Koloro
I really like the looks of this pen; that's what drew me to it. I like the ebonite tan sections alternated with the pale teal translucent sections. I like the fact that it is an eyedropper and that I have to open the back knob to write with it. All of that is good old-fashioned stuff that lures many fountain pen users to certain models. Now, on the minus side: I got a M nib, but it didn't write like a M. It wrote more like an EF. And I like fat nibs. So, on a hunch, I pulled out my box of spare nibs. Fished out a TWSBI MINI 1.1 mm stub. Not the 580, or the Vac 700, or the Vac mini, but the regular mini. Unscrewed the nib & feed on the Opus, then unscrewed the nib & feed on the TWSBI. Then, to my amazement and disbelief, the TWSBI nib screwed right into the opening on the Opus and it works like a dream. So I've essentially got a TWSBI pen in an Opus body. Awesome! The nibs are the same size (#5) and if you own a TWSBI, well, you know how their nibs write. Pretty darn good. Now that I have switched nibs, I am very happy with my Opus 88 Koloro. One thing I must mention: I have very small hands, and when posted, the Opus is way too big for me to write much with. My hand would get sore and tired. However, unposted, it's pretty comfortable. So: Lord help me, I might consider one of the other color models. I like them all. That's where the obsession comes in. If you are happy with the Opus narrow nib, or if you don't mind switching a TWSBI nib into it to get a fatter one, then I recommend this pen for you. I mainly recommend it based on its looks. It also functions very well, as far as the filling system and shut-off valve goes. It's a very good pen. But I say that based mainly on its appearance. It just appeals to me, in all its color offerings.

I was intrigued by this pen whilst reading a review on wellappointed desk. Did some more research and decided to take the plunge, as I have yet to have an eye-dropper pen in my collection.

I ordered the M nib version, which I find a bit too much like European F nib, a replacement is on the way.

It wrote straight out of the box, nib is nice and smooth with just a hint of feedback. I like the size and the pen does not become "top heavy" when posted.
Last but not least it hold "a lot" of ink.

I normally look for and write with vintage fountain pens, however, once and a while a modern pen catches my attention. This was the case with the Koloro Opus 88. I've never owned an eye dropper fill pen and this one is easy to fill and writes very well. I love the design! Thanks to the nice folks at Pen Chalet for the free and prompt shipping. I will be back!

Koloro Demonstrator
What a lovely surprise. This pen has one of the smoothest #6 nibs I own. I got a medium nib. The pen works great. Holds a ton of ink without any worry of leakage. It is a bigger pen than I am use to but I am really enjoying using it. It does not post but I do not post my pens anyway. This is a great pen for the value! I highly recommend it.

So, I have to honest - I was really sceptical about this pen, but I decided to pull the trigger anyway. And I think this was really a good buy. The quality on the pen is quite exceptional, I mean, the nib ALWAYS aligns to the back of the cap, so you could clearly see the nib when the pen is capped. The pen holds quite a large amount of ink, and it does not write as wet as I expected. I was blown away by the quality of the pen, and I think if you like dark demonstrators, this might be the pen for you!

The Opus 88 is a great pen! The blue/tan is a great combo, and the steel nib is wonderfully smooth. The filling system is very easy to use, and it’s nice to not always have a cartridge/converter system. As usual, Pen Chalet’s customer service can’t be beat. No joke, pick up this pen!

A very cool looking pen which writes quite nicely. My only complaint is that the ink migrates under the barrel into the nib theads, which is somewhat unsightly, particularly since it doesn’t occur evenly.

The Opus 88 is such a pleasant surprise! I didn’t quite know what to expect from a sub-$100 fountain pen from a brand I’d never heard of. But you’ve got a gem, my friend! It’s so well made and so well finished. The presentation is gorgeous. It writes beautifully. And the eyedropper system with the “rod” in the middle is genius to keep the ink from getting trapped behind a large bubble of air. I also like that by screwing back down the blind cap, you can effectively shut the pen off which may make it safer for flight / travel.

I think this pen would easily fit in the $150-200 range and I’d recommend it over just about any other sub-$100 fountain pen anywhere. The only caveat being that eyedropper pens can be a bit polarizing with some people being totally open to them while others aren’t comfortable with them. But if you can get past that (and why wouldn’t you since they include a very high quality glass filler!?), this thing is a GEM!

I received my first Opus88 Koloro in the teal blue ebonite and light translucent blue acrylic, and immediately ordered another one (brown ebonite/light blue acrylic). I especially like the rod and valve mechanism in the barrel, which eliminates two of the concerns I've always had with an eyedropper: risk of ink leaking during travel, and no way to increase ink flow. The rod/valve mechanism solves these problems perfectly: one can close the valve for travel and open it for ink flow, and if a bit more ink is needed to prime the feed, it can be done by adjusting the rod. The ebonite and acrylic are machined well, with no tool marks or flaws in the materials. I was hoping the section was ebonite, but it is the same acrylic as the barrel (which still looks quite nice). The nib is a #5 steel German nib which is appropriate for the pen's size, and it was perfectly tuned - very smooth out of the box. I hope Opus88 comes out with more interesting designs. This is a quality pen that's priced economically. It's great to see Pen Chalet carrying some of these quality brands not found elsewhere.
