About the Visconti Homo Sapiens Midi
The Visconti Homo Sapiens Midi fountain pen is made from a revolutionary material created from real basaltic volcanic lava mixed with a patented resin for a virtually unbreakable compound. This lava material makes the pen dense at touch and absorbent to pull moisture from your hand.
The Visconti Homo Sapiens Midi pen comes with the traditional arched clip shaped like a bridge to symbolize friendship and diplomacy. Each fountain pen comes with a 23ct palladium nib and a piston fill system. The pen also has the Visonti 'Hood Safe Lock' that keep the cap on and prevent leakage while not making the pen any harder to open.

The interior's a nice soft leather, the Visconti logo there on the underside of the lid. And of course we have the Visconti Homo Sapiens Midi Fountain Pen. This happens to be the steel version of the pen, it is also available in a bronze version. Chrome colored accents on the pen.
This pen is made out of actual lava rock, and it just has a nice feel to it. great looking pen. Chrome ring here at the bottom of the barrel of the pen. Chrome band there in the center with "Homo Sapiens" engraved on it. Traditional Visconti style arch clip, opens nice and wide, real easy.
Two chrome bands here at the center of the cap, and then at the top of the cap we have the Visconti logo. This has the hood safe lock cap. So you simply twist action there, you can see the little grooves for the hood safe lock on the grip section of the fountain pen. Don't feel like it really gets in the way when I'm holding it. The pen can be posted if you would like to, but to me it makes it a little long. Probably prefer using this without the cap posted.
It has a Palladium Dreamtouch nib. You can see the Visconti logo engraved on there, and the feed there on the back side. This is a piston style pen, so the actuator here is controlled to fill the ink on the back side of nib. You can unscrew that knob to fill the ink.

I love this pen now but it came with a nib that left much to be desired. Had to send it back to Visconti’s US distributor and while it now is functional, it still is scratchy. Love everything else about the pen but I recommend buying Visconti only when you can test the pen yourself first (others have written like a dream) or from a retailer that will test the pen for you and find one with a good quality nib. Otherwise it’s a lot of time and hassle on your part trying to resolve QC issues.

This Visconti Homo Sapiens Dark Age Midi "Grail Pen" is everything I hoped it would be. The price scared me away on numerous occasions, but I finally bought it during a recent Pen Chalet sale and could not be happier with a pen. The basalt lava pen is extremely durable and has just enough weight to feel special, yet not too heavy to give me fatigue after hours of writing. I write with the cap both un-posted and posted, some people do not like the pen being a bit top heavy, but it does not bother me. The dreamtouch nib is bar none the smoothest pen nib I have used out of the box. The Dark Age isn't a power filler, but it's quick and easy to fill with a few twists of the blind cap. For those who prefer to use iron gall inks and/or pigmented inks, this pen is super easy to clean, the nib and feed assembly is pressure fit into the body and the nib is custom fit to an indention in the feed so the nib assembly can be easily removed, disassembled and is a cinch to clean. If you keep coming back to look at this pen, do yourself a favor and buy one, you cannot go wrong with this choice.
