About the Platinum 3776 Century

Nearing its first century of existence the Platinum Pen Company created the Platinum 3776 Century fountain pen. The pen is a result of tradition and untiring efforts. The pen was originally released in 1978 and has been popular ever since. The number 3776 represents the height in meters of Mt. Fuji, the highest peak in Japan.

The Platinum 3776 pen has an innovative cap with the "Slip & Seal" mechanism. This design keeps the ink from drying out inside the pen over time as well as regulate the ink flow in the pen.

The Platinum 3776 Century fountain pen comes with a 14k gold nib and a cartridge converter style fill system.

Note: The converter is no longer included with the Platinum 3776 fountain pen and the Platinum 500 converter must be purchased separately.

I am a fan of the 3776 line of Platinum. They are a good value, come with a variety of nib sizes, they have the great Slip/Seal caps to prevent ink drying out. They are light and comfortable for my hand and the Bourgogne color is striking. I own 4 of this model with different bibs and colors.

Bought the chartres blue variant with a fine nib. Very classy looking pen and packaging. I'm surprised That at this price range they have not supplied a converter. Had to buy one separately. Used the proprietary cartridge till the converter arrived. Found the flow was decent but the nib was very scratchy and still is so. Have to get it tuned and I'm on the look out for who will do that reliably for me. No other complaints with this pen. I wouldn't recommend anyone the fine nib variants for sure. Maybe the medium nibs write better. Was expecting more from Platinum.

I went through a lot of issues trying to get the shipment outside the US and Ron was there all the while sorting out the problems and I'm grateful for his support (in spite of my many emails and calls to him with loads of probably impertinent questions and difficulties I was having).

I dont recommend the pen with a fine nib. Definitely recommend PenChalet.com for all related purchases

I am in love with the pen, which is, I'll admit, at the higher end of my pen budget. It writes like a dream. I wish it was a little more fun to look at but really, I can go into any meeting anywhere and it is just fine (and I can put fun colored ink in it).

I have had my eye on one of these for the past year. I have had no experience with any of the Japanese Big Three fountain pens up to this point. This pen is terrific: substantial feeling and of obvious high quality; It is easily in the same league as my Franklin-Christoph, Edison and yes, even Pelikan pens. Its crowning achievement over the others is the 14 Ct. 585 gold nib as OEM at their steel nib pricing!

Do not be fooled, this is not "just another black pen" in my opinion. I generally avoid black pens, other than some vintage. This color is aptly named: it is a stunning semi-translucent black beauty. However, my real interest lay in that Soft Fine nib. Kudos to the Chalet for actually stocking this nib across much of the 3776 series of pens.

I flushed the nib well prior to inserting the included Platinum Blue-black ink cartridge. The tines seemed to be aligned well and so I put it to Rhodia & Clairefontaine paper. Being of the Japanese genre the tipping is very fine with a relatively small sweet spot as expected. It was not scratchy nor objectionable but the nib did exhibit some toothy feedback and sings over most of the papers tried. Ink flow was definitely on the dry side but became much nicer after a good nib flossing. It improved even more with an ink change to Akkerman's #5 Shocking Blue and to "proper" Japanese paper types (Midori,Apica,Tsubame Fools), for which I'm sure the nib was intended. While not blobby tipped glass smooth, it is wonderfully smooth for such a fine point not likely intended for Western Cursive writing.
Oh ... did I mention Soft-fine? Yes, this nib is delightfully springy/bouncy. This is NO nail of a nib. Some do say it is not a flex nib. For those that care, I say it is a true regular flex when compared to my vintage Pelikan gold and steel nibs (1930-1950's). It requires light-moderate pressure but will happily flex 3x its standard line width and snap right back. Just don't try to abuse it. Also of note: this nib and ink combo did produce shading and sheening on the Japanese papers to various degrees.

I am very happy with this gem of a pen- it's a keeper!

I bought the Black Diamond - lovely black color that's slightly transparent and gives the pen some added character. The nib, as usual for Platinum, is exceptional. Wonderful pen all around.

I just recently took possession of the 3776 Yamanaka. This pen is wonderful. The styling is elegant. The pen is well balanced and fits in the hand extremely well. There nib is smooth and is quite typical of the high level of quality that I have come to expect from Platinum in a nub and the pen overall. I have nothing but praise for this fountain pen. It is excellent.

This a beautiful pen. The Nice Pur is a lightweight pen with excellent ink flow. The "slip and seal" mechanism insures that the pen does not become dry when not in use.

FAQs about the Platinum 3776 Century

Q:
What is the difference between a soft fine nib and a fine and medium nib?
Asked on May 7 2015 by Chih
A:
The difference between the soft fine and the fine is the soft fine nib will have some flex in the nib to allow for line variation in the stroke.
Q:
Is "medium fine" the same as "soft fine"?
Asked on Jan 20 2015 by Mike
A:
No, the medium fine is between a fine nib and a medium nib in size. There is a specific "soft fine" nib if you are interested.
Q:
Does it come with a cartridge converter or must that be purchased separately?
Asked on Nov 27 2014 by Kane
A:
The Platinum 3776 fountain pen comes with a cartridge but no longer comes with a Platinum 500 ink converter and must be ordered separately.
Q:
Is it available in the new "Soft Fine" nib?
Asked on Oct 30 2014 by Paul Field
A:
The Platinum 3776 fountain pen is available with the soft fine nib in either the Black, Bourgogne, or Chartres Blue colors. We would have to special order it though and it would take an extra week.

This is the Platinum 3776 Century fountain pen. It comes in either blue or white faux leather box. Since is that the Shoji version of the pen it is a white faux leather box. It has a hinged top to it and included with the pen have informational instructions about the 3776 fountain pen. On the underside of the lid we have 3776 Shoji with some Japanese characters.

This is a cartridge converter style pen. Included with the pen is a blue and a black ink cartridge. A converter for the pen is actually inside the pen(No longer included with the pen). You can see that through the barrel since this is a demonstrator style pen. You can see the inside the pen.

This Shoji fountain pen is a limited edition pen. It has a slight blue tint to the pen and chrome accents. On the top of the cap it has a small chrome band that runs around the cap. That holds that chrome clip on. You can actually see inside the cap and see that "slip and seal" mechanism that is a trademark mechanism that Platinum has developed. It is great because it keeps your pen fresh and ready to write. It keeps it from drying out.

Then on the cap we have 3776 engraved with Platinum made in Japan. Then at the bottom of the barrel we have a small chrome band that runs around the pen. You can see on the inside, you can see that converter. The cap on the pen unscrews. This is a larger pen so you can write with or without it posted. It's not too heavy. It's a resin pen so it's not too heavy to hold. It has a small chrome band that runs around the grip section here and at the very tip of the cap. Now this is gold nib. It's a 14-karat gold nib. Engraved on the nib is 3776 and the Platinum logo.

To exchange the ink on this pen you simply unscrew that grip section for the barrel. Since it already has an ink converter attached you would dip that nib into your ink and screw the end of this converter to draw the into that chamber. If you'd like to use a cartridge style ink you simply unscrew that converter and you can put the cartridges on. Actually it just pulls of it doesn't screw.
